5 Simple Ways to Eliminate Stress

Days are busy with work and evenings are busy with family and hobbies.

Everyone seems to demand more time than you have to give. And the time you do give is never as focused as you’d like it to be.

Our greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.
– William James

While stress is caused by feelings we personally attach to a situation, and while our feelings are something we directly control, simply telling ourselves to “think differently” isn’t always the fastest stress-relief plan.

While you work on changing your thoughts on the inside, there are things you can do on the outside to reduce, and maybe even eliminate stress from your life.

Here Are 5 Simple Ways to Eliminate Stress:

  1. Get Outside

The simple act of being in nature has been proven to reduce stress. More specifically, those who take regular walks in the forest have been shown to have lower blood pressure, and lower cortisol levels. This is the hormone that shows up when you are stressed.

When you’re outside there’s a good chance you’re moving, and exercise is another great stress reliever. As an added bonus you’re probably detached from your phone, tablet, and computer. This time to focus on yourself, your thoughts, and your breath are very restorative.

  1. Drink Water

This one sounds pretty easy, but because water is such an integral part of our body’s daily functions, being down even half a liter can trigger increased levels of cortisol – those stress hormones.

It seems like there’s more to it, however. When you’re stressed your heart rate rises, you breathe faster, and you’re more likely to be distracted from eating and drinking well.

  1. Do Something for Yourself

Sometimes you just need to disconnect and take care of yourself. Taking time away from your stressors gives your brain a chance to calm down and reset. When you come back to life, you’ll be able to think more clearly, you’ll be a more patient and creative problem solver, and you’ll be less irritable and short with others which means your relationships improve.

  1. Breathe

If you’re a yogi, you most likely understand the healing power of breath and the power it has to get you through painful, stressful, or anxiety-causing situations. If you’re new to restorative breathing, check out the long list of calming, breath-related apps that are out there for phones and tablets. Learning this valuable skill could literally save your life someday.

  1. Separate Life and Work

Take a close look at your day and analyze what it is that causes you the most stress. if work is stressful, set aside time to detach at the end of each day. If it\’s family that\’s weighing you down, get some help or make some time to focus on yourself each week. When you allow every part of your life to flow together, you don’t stand a chance of getting away from the things that cause you the most stress. We all need to build a little separation into our lives.

We live in a fast-paced society that makes it difficult to get away from stressors completely.

Whether you are anxious about the events of the future or frustrated by the events of the past, it’s important to focus on what you can do today to move your life forward in the best possible way.

You’re doing great, hang in there!
