In this time of goal setting, resolution creation, and vowing to be a better person overall, we end up promising ourselves some really great things for the year ahead.
It’s no secret, however, that keeping those New Year’s resolutions is far easier said than done. So this year, take a step back and first mentally prepare for those changes that need to happen. A small shift in mindset can take your life from where it is now, to where you want it to be.

Recognize Negative Comments and Follow with Positive.
Between self-sabotaging thoughts, and the small comments that cut others down, the world can be a highly damaging place. Acknowledge any negative thoughts and immediately take positive action to counterbalance. This helps train your mind to not focus on what’s wrong with a situation, but rather, what’s good.
While you may be outwardly kind to others, how kind are you to yourself? How accepting are you of your body, your relationships, and your talents? Make an effort to say one positive thing about yourself for every single negative thought or comment that makes its way to the surface.

Laugh at Yourself.
Know that the best skills and talents are learned through repetition and years of practice. In order to succeed, you must fail. Why not laugh at your failures and slip-ups, and move on quickly? Why not congratulate yourself for trying something new and be grateful for your ability to pick yourself up again.
As an added bonus, laughter is contagious. When others see you smiling and having fun, and not taking yourself too seriously, you just may inspire someone else to do the same.

Get Outside of Your Comfort Zone.
Placing yourself in an environment where you are not 100% comfortable with the people or the surroundings will help your mind adapt to future unfamiliar situations. Learning to be comfortable with the uncomfortable builds confidence. Self-confidence leads to a more positive outlook on life.
Go to a movie by yourself, take a new class, or try new foods. Whatever you choose, your mindset will be rewarded with the knowledge that you were able to get through successfully.

Learn to Admit When You’re Wrong.
For some, this is one of the hardest things to do in life, but knowing when to give in goes a long way toward building a positive mindset. When you admit you are wrong, you open your mind to new possibilities, new ways of solving problems and approaching a situation. Others will respect you more, you become more approachable, and you learn to relax a bit. No one can be right 100% of the time and being able to admit you’re wrong is a true gift.

Start A Gratitude Journal.
When your mindset is focused on positive thoughts, it cannot be filled with negative. Write down a short list each day of things you are grateful for. No matter how small the item or how short your list, your mind will be set on a path of happiness, acceptance, and positivity for the rest of the day.
If you find yourself feeling angry, depressed, or frustrated much of the time, know that you have the ability to do something about it. You can shift your mindset, reach your goals, and gain confidence. Start by selecting one thing on the list above and give it a try.
