Influence is defined as your capacity to leave a lasting effect on someone’s choices, behavior, and even their character. You are likely here, reading this article because this blog and this website have influenced you in one way or another at some point in your life.
Influence is great to have when you have a powerful message to share or when you want to put your purpose into action.
It allows you to leave a lasting impression of you, your work, and your values in someone’s life and in someone’s choices.
Many people feel that puffing up their chests is a way to be influential to others when really they come off as arrogant or pompous. Perceived arrogance can shoot you down faster than anything else in any kind of situation. When others feel that you think you are better than them, your arrogance will push them away not allowing you to influence them.
How, then, can you have a conversation that builds your influence?
Before we get started, I want to emphasize the importance of the following traits for when you use your abilities to influence others:
- Integrity
Uphold goodness in all that you do. Your values and the things that you find to be important parts of your inner principles will always shine through when you exercise influence. Practicing integrity in all that you do increases your influence and trustworthiness. It is important to build a foundation of trust between you and those that you work with.
- Dedication
When others see how dedicated you are to your passion and your purpose, you become an example that they will want to follow. Being dedicated and actively pursuing your goals is a natural magnet that will make people want to be around you more.
- Follow-Through
The ability to follow through and push yourself to meet your end goal further improves how people see and understand your message and your purpose, and can really drive home your integrity and dedication.
So, now that you have these three important traits in mind, let’s get started on the keys to improving your influence in conversation.
Here Are 4 Keys to Having A Conversation That Builds Your Influence (Without Being Arrogant):
-
Build Trust
The three traits we just talked about are essential for you to build and maintain trust. Credibility is key. We want others to trust in our influence and to trust in our ability to see things through. In conversation, your integrity shines through when your words are consistent with your actions.
-
Be Cooperative
This is a conversation. How can I be ‘cooperative’ in a conversation? Communication is a two-way street, and even if you’re the one with the message to share, it is absolutely necessary to create an atmosphere of openness. Allow the other person to weigh in their ideas and be welcoming to what they have to say. Being cooperative helps the other person feel they are an important part of this effort because they are.
-
Use Logic
Appeal to the other person’s intellectual and rational positions. Using sound logic helps to really strengthen your point. If something doesn’t make sense, it’s likely the other person will not believe you or want to further entertain your ideas. Come prepared to back your talking points with logical explanations and reasoning.
-
Connect Emotionally
Use your message to connect to the other person’s individual goals and values. If what you’re saying truly means something to you, find a way to make this mean something to them, too. Listen to what they have to say, understand what it is that is meaningful to them, and connect your message to that. Like I said earlier, the other person is as much a part of the conversation as you are, even if you’re the one with a message to share.
Building your influence in conversation is one great way to become unstoppable.
