CALM YOUR MIND AND FEEL MORE JOY

Learn to calm down the winds of your mind, and you will enjoy great inner peace.

~Remez Sasson

The mind. It has an especially important task. It helps us think. This is a good thing, but sometimes it goes into overdrive and floods with too much information and ideas, some accurate, some not so accurate.

When thinking goes into overdrive the result is overthinking, anxiety, stress.

Stress

Our world constantly bombards us with information, add this to a chatter brain, aka as a monkey mind, and we set ourselves up for stress. Living with low-level stress has become normalized to the point that we don’t recognize it and, consequently, suffer the cost.

Stress, whether low or high level, affects our bodies and minds. How? Cortisol, the hormone most associated with stress, wreaks havoc on mental and physical health over the long run by putting us in a constant state of fight or flight response. And neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, which aids in mental focus, and serotonin, which regulates feelings of happiness, will be reduced.

Many people believe their overactive mind is a natural state. This couldn’t be further from the truth. This doesn’t mean to say that a calm mind and joy are not a lost cause. Once the mind is quiet, peace and joy automatically follow.

Calm your mind

It’s therefore important to calm our minds to live a peaceful and joyful life. Having an arsenal of techniques in our back pocket to wield when the need arises is the best way to keep our minds from going into hyper-drive.

When thoughts start to race, be present with them. Label them but don’t judge them, recognize them for what they are.

There are many effective techniques from mindfulness-based stress reduction and cognitive-behavioral therapies you can use to bring your mind back to calm.

The following strategies can help you move forward to a calmer mind and a more joyful state:

  • Decide if a thought is helpful or not. If the thought is a negative one, discard it or reframe it in a more positive light.
  • Watch your mental chatter. Pay attention to the voice in your mind, but don’t engage with it.
  • Take a few deep, slow breaths. It will help you relax.
  • Play calming music. Not only will this help you relax but it will also bring some enjoyment to your day.
  • Use positive words in thoughts and while speaking. Be kind to yourself and others in your speech.
  • Take a walk in nature. Focusing on the sounds, smells, and sights of nature will bring you relaxation and a sense of peace.
  • Practice mindfulness. Be mindful of each moment and appreciate it for what it is.
  • Stay in the present. Don’t revisit the past or project into the future.
  • Exercise. Helps our body relax. Your mind will follow suit.
  • Create a bliss board. Let your vision board explode with all the blissful things you want in your life.

Use these ideas as a springboard to experience a calmer mind and propel yourself into a more joyful existence. Research, experiment, and choose the strategies that work best for you and your lifestyle. Keep in mind that this isn’t a one-time solution, but a new way of life. It will help you be creative and effective in all you do, both personally and professionally.

Cultivate calm and joy, and delight in the benefits.
