The Awareness You Need for the Life You Want Part 4: Awareness in Action with Gratitude
This is Part 4 of a 5-part series: The Awareness You Need for the Life You Want and it’s an introduction to the topics in my new book, “The Awareness You Need for the Life You Want; Simple Tools for Brave Healing,” due out at the end of the year. My mission with this series is to help you understand awareness as a path to healing on a deeper level; to help you master the skills and develop a powerful life-long practice that’ll transform your life.
If awareness is everything then gratitude is everything else.
The beauty of an awareness practice and using it as a path to healing and transforming your life is you get really great at knowing when you’re screwing it up. Awareness gains momentum with practice. When you start you won’t be able to go back to sleep too often, and after you’ve been practicing a while, it gets easier.
The first thing I want you to do with your new-found badass level of awareness is to shift the “Hell No!” feelings and thoughts to gratitude whenever you can. Awareness in action means you’re not just noticing things; you’re doing something about it. Awareness is great, but if you don’t change the way you show up in the world based on that new awareness, nothing will change.
Using gratitude is one of the best, most powerful ways to shift awareness of pain, tightness, doubt, fear or anything else not floating your boat to something better and higher vibratory. Why do you want to shift into a higher vibration? Because what you’re vibing out is what you’ll attract more of.
The problem is we think we’re really great at this awareness thing and in reality, we’re still spending hours a day worrying, doubting and fearing. We’re aware, but how many hours are we actually awake, and even if we are, what are we doing about it? Sometimes the awareness can be difficult, negative, painful and so on. And just being aware of that can suck us into a pit of more of it. When we’ve gotten good at honoring and feeling the feelings inside it’s time to do something different with them. Let’s first start by being grateful for the good stuff.
I call this skill “Flipping the switch,” and it’s the way I shift myself into a thought, belief or behavior that better serves my big, fat desires, dreams, and goals. There never seems to be a shortage of things to feel grateful for. If your breathing, then you have one. But more often we have way more than that to shift to when we need it.
In Dr. Wayne Dyer’s book, “Excuses Be Gone,” he asks us; If you’re not 100% sure a situation is going to turn out positive, but you’re also not 100% sure it’s going to turn out negative, then spend the time you’re waiting thinking about the positive outcome. Can’t hurt, right?
I think so many of us practice expecting worst case scenarios because we\’re afraid of being disappointed that we don’t realize just how often we’re keeping our thoughts low vibe. Living from fear never feels good. Time to be brave and try something else.
The key here is moving into thoughts, beliefs or actions that light you up; focusing on the joy.
Let’s practice. Sit in your comfy chair and drop down deep into your body. Breathe deeply and relax, soften and release. Scan the body for tightness and see if you can unclench everything. Clear your mind and notice what you sense or feel. Close your eyes and practice this for several deep breaths before you come back to this.
Now grab your notebook, pen, and timer. Set the timer for five minutes and fill in the blank: I’m grateful for ___________. Remember, no rules, just write.
Creating gratitude lists is an excellent way to shift your energy. You can try reading this out loud and/or sharing it with a friend. It’s interesting to me how often we focus on problems or complaints but rarely give our energy to the things we love or are grateful for. The power of this shift will be palpable. This isn’t just positive thinking. It’s a mindset and a lifestyle of being on-purpose and positive with your thoughts, beliefs, and actions. It’s the way you’ll shift your energy, attract new and better energy and manifest your desires and dreams.
