Chakras – Our Body’s Secret Energy Pathways: The Root of It All

The Root of It All

The Root Chakra or Muladhara in Sanskrit is the starting point for developing and maintaining balance. Located at the base of the spine it is symbolized by a red four-petaled lotus with a yellow square at its center. Its role is to ground us and help us move closer to our life goals, and because of Muladhara’s association with the element of Earth this energy revolves around your sense of security, relationships, and ancestry.

Author Cristi Christensen beautifully describes Muladhara as “The root from which true health, well-being, and empowerment grows. It’s the foundation on which our physical and energetic body and every Chakra is built upon.”

The Bija or Seed Mantra for Muladhara is “LAM”

Are You Out of Balance?

When our Root Chakra is out of balance it can cause us to feel insecure, restless, and have very little energy. You might feel like you have lost your sense of belonging or interest in your day-to-day life. An unbalanced Muladhara can even manifest as physical issues such as arthritis, constipation, bladder, or colon problems.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms it may be possible that you have an imbalanced root chakra

  • Pain, stiffness, or heaviness in your feet or legs
  • Sense of physical instability
  • Feeling ungrounded, and insecure
  • Home life feels unsettled, even chaotic
  • Feeling like you are carrying a heavy burden

How to Balance and Cleanse Your Root Chakra

The Root Chakra connects our experiences with the element of Earth. It represents Safety, Security, and Grounding. Cleansing this Chakra establishes your right to be here and creates a solid foundation for all your endeavors in life! There are several techniques that you can use to balance and cleanse your chakras varying from meditation, chanting, diet, and physical activity.

The Tree, Warrior, and Easy Sitting pose help to gently get your body moving and to establish and maintain a stronger relationship with your body. Finding your balance with yoga can take some time at first but keep practicing and you will soon begin to feel your core getting stronger and you will be able to hold these poses with ease. As you hold each pose, breathe in and out and try to envision roots flowing from you into Earth, grounding and connecting you and giving you strength.

When working to cleanse your Root Chakra do your best to avoid red dyes and artificially colored foods, instead opt for whole red fruits and vegetables such as Strawberries, Pomegranate, Red Bell Peppers, and Beets.

Essential oils such as Cedarwood, Frankincense, Vetiver, and Sandalwood, can provide a sense of grounding, center your mind, are very helpful in opening and balancing our Root Chakra

There are many Crystals that help us to support our root chakra, such as Brown Jasper, Red Jasper, Smoky Quartz, Hematite, Cuprite, Mahogany Obsidian, Tourmaline, Rhodonite, Garnet, and Bloodstone. Generally, red stones and crystals are associated with the root chakra, and black stones and crystals are thought to provide the stability and protection needed to support the root chakra. A great way to use these stones is to place them in your pocket while gardening, going for a walk, or doing anything that connects you to nature.

Muladhara (Root) Chakra Meditation

This short meditation as a daily practice will help you build a stronger foundation to manifest your inner desires.

Sitting in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths allowing your shoulders to relax. Now visualize the beautiful four-petaled red lotus flower just below the base of your spine, see it blooming and growing with each breath in and out. When you feel ready, begin chanting the Bija or Seed Mantra “LAM” seven times continuing to breathe in and out expanding your awareness. Feel your connection with the Earth as your roots are strengthening and grounding you with each breath. Continue breathing in and out as you slowly open your eyes, and repeat three times I am safe, I am stable, I am grounded.

Your main goal when working to balance your Root Chakra is to learn to trust and love yourself. This will allow you to let go of your fears so you can have the confidence of knowing how important and valuable you are in this world, and that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. As you practice you will notice your confidence and trust growing stronger each day. Once the root chakra is activated or cleared, the dormant energy flows freely through all seven chakras leading to an expanded state of consciousness.

Take your time and enjoy the process of strengthening your foundation. These practices will enhance your overall well-being and allow you to appreciate each step of your journey to living your very best life.

In the next article, we will be focusing on exploring the Sacral Chakra, the second chakra in the body. This is the center of our creativity, sexuality, and inspiration.

Until then, keep practicing!

Namaste,
Jenny Tasker
