Here is her expanded thought …

Too often we find ourselves dwelling on the past, reliving experiences, decisions, and events that caused us pain. When that occurs, we step into a dangerous state of mind that generates a highly negative outcome.

The truth is, we can never undo or change the past. It is what it is. By replaying it in our minds nothing gets resolved. Yet the pain lives on. It becomes a downward cycle into deeper hurt, stress, and frustration. Habitually going to this dark place is not only unproductive, it can lead to lethargy, depression, and futility about life and coping with its inevitable challenges.

Fortunately, we have a choice. We can choose to consciously and intentionally bring our thoughts back to the present. There, in the present, we have power and freedom, which is the greatest gift of all! By living in the present we can decide how we choose to act so we generate new and better outcomes. We have greater clarity, focus, and the capacity to take action on the decisions we make.

No one can undo the past. But we can let it go. Only then can we learn to forgive ourselves for decisions and behavior we may regret. All humans make mistakes. When we learn from them and live our lives accordingly, we become role models for others, especially our children and relationship partners. With this insight, we can also forgive others for ways they may have hurt us in the past.

Forgiveness is not forgetting. We don’t forgive to let others off the hook or to absolve them of blame or responsibility for their actions. We forgive for US. It cuts the emotional cord that ties us to old hurts and pain. It frees us from the endless cycle of distress tied to the past.

Forgiveness is the key to opening the door to a happier, more fulfilling future – a future we all deserve for a life rich in promise and rewards. Let go of the past and you\’re on your way to brighter days ahead!
