How many times have you been on a diet and made the decision to clear out all the junk, thinking that would be the answer to losing weight?
The reason I ask is because as a former yo-yo dieter for over 20 years, I would not buy any cookies, chips or junk food a week or so before the start of the diet because I didn\’t want to “fail.” I wanted to make sure there was nothing to tempt me and lure me away from telling myself that this was it – this time, I was going to stick to my guns and not cheat!
It seems like another lifetime ago that I was living in this madness. I now refer to it as “The All or Nothing Syndrome.” This approach is a recipe for failure. I know, because I lived it time and time again.
When I am working with my clients, whether in person, on Skype or the phone, I never suggest they remove everything from their cupboards that is having a negative effect on their health and waistline because of this very reason. Isn\’t that refreshing news?! The mere mention of quinoa (keen-wah) to someone who has been living on potato chips, cookies, and fast food could send them in a spin and running for the hills. Once you start incorporating healthy options instead of counting points, calories, or anything else, the transition to focusing on quality food instead of quantity becomes easier. Focusing on weight loss becomes a thing of the past. It\’s a beautiful thing for sure.
I totally encourage you to cut yourself some slack. Don\’t get rid of all your comfort foods and leave yourself craving your go-to snacks. I teach the opposite of many approaches to weight loss because it is a holistic approach with a big emphasis on health. It\’s a lasting approach and one that allowed me to transition into keeping things simple and enjoyable. Food no longer controls my mind and I haven\’t been on a diet in years, and I never will again.
