The Art of Listening

The Art of Listening

How often do you feel when someone is not listening to you? How does it affect you?

How often do you truly listen to someone? Do you even notice their reactions?

I experience not being listened to a lot. I always have, especially from people close to me. As a child, it frustrated me. Today, I simply align and enter my heart to love them.

We all strive to communicate; most of us do so without the realisation that communication is not only chatter and making ourselves heard, but listening openly to others and, importantly, to our deep inner voice of wisdom.

In our world, we communicate all the time with the people we live with, neighbours, work colleagues, friends and with those we meet casually for a moment or two.

Listening is a Powerful Skill

Communication is an art and listening is a powerful skill within this art. In modern life, we are trained from childhood to be outspoken and compete to get our point across. The rise of the internet and social media has enhanced this and the inherent need to put ourselves and our opinion out there has seemingly become insatiable.

We have learned to put all our energy into being heard and making others understand us.

Have we forgotten how to try and understand each other?

Pause and take a breath

Do I love to talk to people?

Do I talk to people or at people?

Do I strive to get my point across?

Do I love to be heard and seen?

Do I put a lot of energy into making others hear me?

Do I put a lot of energy into my social media posts?

Am I constantly checking how seen and heard I am?

How much do I listen to others?

I grew up in a household that lacked the art of listening. I remember my parents and grandparents talking all the time without actually saying anything.

One of my earliest memories from when I was three years old is of my Grandma sitting for me while my parents were out at work one day. Granny was not used to the modern, for the time, gas cooker, and after lunch I knew something was wrong. “Granny, there is a smell of gas.” “No, it’s just the smell from the cooking.” As the hours passed, the gas smell worsened: “Granny, there is a strong smell of gas, my stomach is doing back flips and I feel dizzy.” “No, there is not, go back upstairs.” This went on until my parents returned.

“Why is there such a strong smell of gas?” My Mum knew as soon as she opened the door that something was wrong. My Dad checked the kitchen and sure enough Granny had done something wrong with the cooker.

“I didn’t believe Carole; I was really annoyed that she kept mentioning the smell of gas.”

I learned from this experience that adults did not listen to children. As I grew up, I came to realise that many people do not listen regardless of age.

Competition

In general conversation, many of us only listen selectively; often our attention is split between our phones, TV or other devices. We tend to be competitive in conversation, with each party determined to win at any cost.

Consider for a moment what a refreshing change it would make if we all let the other person win in conversation. It would be even more productive if we let them win and felt happy that they had won.

Pause and take a breath

How well do I listen to others?

Do I listen at all?

Do I give partial listening?

Do I give my full listening attention?

I like to win when I listen to others.

I listen fully to others and let them win.

I love listening to others.

I feel happy when I listen to others and let them win.

Becoming a Listener is a Transformational Force

When you choose to listen and fully engage with someone, it helps you to understand them on a deeper level. It leads to a deeper connection.

When you listen with a sense of calm and stillness, it creates a gentle acceptance between the speaker and listener, creating a far more powerful transformation for both parties than people realise.

Listen with your Heart

Rather than listening with a focus on your ears and ‘hearing’ someone verbally, bring your awareness into your heart and listen from here. Rather than hearing words, you tune into the true melody that is playing between you.

As you listen with your heart, you can set a person free, hold the energy and space between you and enrich their life and yours.

When you join with someone and listen on a heart and soul level, the speaker and listener become one.

Listening with your heart can become a beautiful dance of souls as you begin to truly know and understand the person on a sincere and profound level.

It is a great and rare gift to allow yourself to truly listen to what someone is saying.

Pause and take a breath

Reflect for a few moments each day.

Sit comfortably and relax your body.

Focus on your breath.

Slow down your breathing.

Listen to the sound of your breath.

Allow your awareness to relax deep within you so that you become centred.

Listen outside to the noises around you: traffic, children, birdsong, the wind and the rain.

Accept each sound as you hear it, then let it go.

Bring your attention to the sounds just outside the room, then let them go.

Listen to the sounds close to you, just beside your ears.

Practice listening attentively to all the sounds around you.

You now become an observer of the sounds all around the space you are sitting in. Pay them no attention; begin to let them wash over you.

Stay here for five to ten minutes.

Now bring your attention within again.

Listen to your breath.

Listen to the sounds of your body; the easy sounds first:

The gentle rustle of your clothes.

Your heartbeat.

Your digestion.

Any other subtle sounds you can hear your body make.

Feel the shift in your awareness and the new peace that fills your being.

What can I do in this moment to feel better?

How can I help a person when I am listening to them?

I bring this inner peace as I listen to someone else.

I can extend the peace to someone else as I listen.

A Shift in Perspective

As we walk our awakened, spiritual path, we usually need to adjust our perspective and open ourselves to the world. We open to life and other people in different ways. Irrespective of our daily lifestyle, we must walk on the earth and through life in a sacred way. We must appreciate life, live and listen to the world and people with openness.

To listen without judgement, we must honour people and all living things in new ways, in ways we have never conceived of before. We learn to savour the moment, relax and listen to inspiration and intuition.

Without a listener there can be no speaker. Find joy in listening to others and the joy will be returned when others listen to you.

Unconditional Listening Leads to Unconditional Love

As you practice listening from a pure, clear perspective, you open to the mystery of each moment in life. You begin to listen to what is actually being said, rather than what you would like to hear.

When you take the time to listen closely to others and hear what they are really expressing, it can make a dramatic change to your own mind and the way you think and perceive things. It has the power to transform your whole consciousness and open you to deeper, higher levels of yourself.

You become a conscious listener, an unconditional listener and open to unconditional love, both for yourself and everything and everyone around you.

Soul Listening is Soul Love

Your Soul’s willingness to love is naturally patient. Soul love is in harmony with the pattern and flow of the universe. As you practice the patience to listen, you begin to feel your soul’s patience.

Think of the sun, the great being that warms and gives life to our planet. The sun is still within and has the capacity to shine with ease. Observe the patience of the sun as it constantly shines out light and love, unfaltering and patient.

Practice listening to yourself first. When you practice listening with patience, you become like the sun. You steadily pour out your warming light. You allow others to shine with you and the love and light of your souls join and shine as one light. Patience flows through you and you let go of any sense of impatience or rush.

Listen Beyond the Words

As you become a conscious, unconditional listener, your heart is open and you tune into your soul with ease. As you listen from this space, it is much easier to tune into someone beyond the verbal, spoken words. The spoken word in everyday life is generally from the personality, ego self. The little self makes up its many stories about me, you and them and always looks for outside verification to justify the human thoughts and surface words.

As an evolved spiritual practitioner on the path, a facilitator, teacher or healer, you realise that the only way to clear, heal, transform and transcend any pain or issue is to peel away the layers and heal at the soul level.

As a professional healer, I have listened to many clients’ verbal, surface issues that were wrapped up in stories. When I tune into their soul and listen beyond the words, it results in something completely different being revealed by the soul, and this is the underlying wound, issue and karma that needs to be addressed and transformed.

Many new doorways have opened for me when I have listened with an open heart, with unconditional love and beyond the spoken words.

Pause and take a breath

When I am with people, I devote time to total listening.

I listen with my heart.

I let go of any foregone conclusions.

I listen with compassion and grace.

I listen beyond the words.

What is the deeper message hidden within or beneath their words?

What is their soul saying?

What is their deepest soul intention?

What do they have to clear?

How does the soul intend to heal?

How does the soul intend to grow?

I listen to discover everything I can about their reality.

I refrain from giving my point of view.

I give others the space to express and grow.

I never see them as having faults.

I never empower their faults.

I have total patience with the pace of their growth.

I listen unconditionally.

I love unconditionally.

Listening Higher

As you master the art of listening and listen beyond the words from your heart and soul, you may begin to hear the voice of your spiritual guides and higher teachers. From your heart and soul level, your energy and awareness expand, and you open to receive the special blessings of the Divine. It can be your Christ, your Buddha, your Ganesh, your Tara, whichever essence resonates with you, and there are many.

Listen to the emanation as your spiritual teachers and guides lead you to enlightenment.

“The Unknowable

If you look and fail to see:

Its name is “remote.”

If you listen and fail to hear:

Its name is “rarefied.”

If you touch and fail to find anything:

Its name is “subtle.”

These three cannot give us warning signs.

Hence blending, we treat them as one.”

– Laozi – Tao Te Ching.

When you feel someone is not listening to you, consider how often you truly listen to them. Align with your breath, move into your heart and listen within. As you move into a calm inner state, you can listen deeply and with total patience to the other person. You listen beyond the words to the true expression of their soul; you join and dance together in pure high communication of peace, love and light.

Until you realise the ultimate truth, listening is indispensable.
