These three core affirmations are strength statements. You are proclaiming to yourself, and to the Universe, that you are worthy of everything that life has to offer. Everyone on this planet has the universal right to exist in a state of joy, abundance, happiness, and pure love. Now, for all of you that just heavily scoffed at that sentence, please know that I used to scoff too. For all of you that nodded emphatically and instantly smiled – I hope to be there soon myself. I’m almost there, and I’m willing to put the work in to achieve that place of peace, and inner stillness.
Isn’t that what it comes down to, in almost anything you want in life? Are you willing to put the time and energy into what it takes to get there? Yes, the progress may be slow in some places, and in others you’ll be lightning fast. Are you willing to keep going through the slow paces where the muck of your past reality, the tar of your past trauma, and the flying monkeys of negativity in your present will almost certainly pull you backwards? It may not be that bad for some survivors of past trauma and abuse, however for most, that’s almost exactly how it’s been described. Both by myself and others that I’ve worked with. The phrase I’ve often used, and heard is, “One step forward, two steps back.” Although, I really appreciate how my dad described it once. He said that it feels like you’re always a half-beat off in the dance of life.
“I will choose what’s best for me.” – I want you to end that statement with power in your voice on that last word: ME. I WILL choose what’s best for ME. As you say that sentence, ignore the flying monkeys that shoot out of the sky directly into the forefront of your mind, telling you otherwise. Shut down the people that have made, or are making you feel like you can’t. You have every right to make any choice, any decision that brings you peace, joy, bliss, love, and even a jump in your step. EVERYONE has the right to this, and anyone that tells you otherwise does not have your best interest in mind. In the end of your journey, when you are looking back on your life – what movie do you want to watch? The one you watch while smiling and nodding, feeling the good and the bad, connected to what mattered to you? Or the one where you remained quiet, unhappy, frustrated, depressed, and trying to please everyone else?
“I will honor my inner child.” – At your first opportunity, I want you to make a list of 10 things that you used to do as a child that made you happy. Playing outside, swinging on a tire swing, running as fast as you could because you were convinced that your tennis shoes made you run like Flash, digging in the dirt to discover all of the cool bugs, watching fireflies at night while you are convinced that they were really fairies, standing outside and feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin and the grass under your feet. Anything and everything that comes to your mind, where as soon as you recall it, it makes your inner child light right up. I can promise you that if you are willing to put the work in, your inner child will help you recall these things. Focus on that feeling that you just recalled – the freedom, the exuberance of youth, feeling bright. Now, seek what makes you feel that way in the present. If your inner-child simply wants to take a nap or go slowly, then honor that too. As long as you make it a point to stop and listen to the needs of the little version of you, the big version of you will ultimately feel better.
“I see my strength, and I am proud of who I have become.” – You are alive, you have survived, and you are still standing. The next time you find yourself in front of a mirror, really look at yourself. Take off the dark coat of trauma and/or abuse that someone else has made you wear. Look in your eyes, and see what I see when I look at you, my fellow survivors – a warrior, a fighter, a super-hero, a champion. Stand up straight, look yourself in the eye, locking on to the fire in your soul, and be proud of who you are. Find your inner badass, and start living life how YOU want it to be.
