Part 2/5 – Finding Harmony in the Noise
Written by Leah Skurdal

When a band’s too-loud music drowns out the instruments and individual voices, ear plugs can help. Like a painfully loud band, the noise in our culture from political disagreements, media distortions, and heavy workloads can drown out the harmonies in life. Ear plugs won’t help. Our own thoughts can get lost in the noise of the world and we may fall into dis-ease.

During our human experience, we encounter many situations with opportunities to experience dis-ease, stress, anxiety, depression—and personal growth. When you have strong mental and emotional resilience, you can handle strong emotions and stay afloat. For instance, tapping into inner resilience while grieving the loss of a loved one, a job, or someone’s health allows us to face the challenges and bounce back from setbacks with grace.

Someone without strong resilience may ruminate on problems; their ego-mind thoughts cycle around familiar patterns of self-doubt, blame, shame, frustration, and worry, unable to find solutions. They may become physically or mentally ill, and rely on overeating and drinking alcohol as coping mechanisms. These non-resilient behaviors impact work-life and personal-life relationships and productivity.

Building your resilience will help your work life and personal life thrive despite challenges and setbacks. One area to begin building resilience is to turn down the volume of your outer and inner life.

Where can you turn down the noise in your own life?

Maybe you’re comfortable with and acclimated to a certain level of constant noise—barking dogs, traffic sounds, electrical hum. But, what if you created some space to hear your own thoughts? What creativity might emerge from your wise inner being?

Maybe you could turn down the decibels on the media you watch and listen to. Maybe you could create some noise-free zones in your day. Can you turn off the noise for a specific time of peaceful quiet every day? Creating a noise-free time might take extra effort. With little kids, you might need to stay up late or get up early to relish the quiet while they sleep.

When you can turn down the outside noise, you might be confronted with your inner noise—the non-stop chatter of the ego-mind. Criticism, blame, judgment, or constant commentary can disrupt your attempt to find inner peace and calm.

In our second resilience-building event, Resilience for Harmony: Tools, Tips & Exercises for Wellbeing, five experts will focus on incorporating different aspects of resilience into our lives. Master Life Coach, David McLeod will share a simple mechanism for taming the ego mind and revealing your own unique pathway.

David McLeod reminds us,

When you are feeling the stress of chaos and confusion in the outer world, harmony might be the last thing on your mind. If you can remember that most chaos and confusion actually reside in your ego mind, you can find a pathway to calmness and serenity—and that is where noise gives way to harmony.
