The Evolution of Intelligence

Emotional intelligence

Welcome to the sixth installment in my yearlong series on Joy Intelligence™ (JQ)!

The Evolution of Intelligence

Diving into the different types of intelligence (IQ, EQ, CQ, PQ, etc.) and their relationship with JOY Intelligence™.

Last month, I presented Martin Seligman’s model of Positive Psychology and how it aligns with JQ™ principles. This month, we’ll be exploring the evolution of intelligence, from Emotional to Social, Conversational, Positive, and Soul Intelligence, all of which embody joy as an all-encompassing force.

Emotional Intelligence: Joy as a Key Driver

Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence (EI) framework emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Joy plays a critical role in enhancing each of these aspects.

Social and Conversational Intelligence: Joy in Connection

The Social Intelligence (SI) theory was first developed by psychologist Edward Thorndike all the way back in 1920. Today, we can say that social intelligence is the ability to read and properly react to social signals, monitor, understand, and manage one’s own emotions, and fit into a variety of social contexts.

Conversational Intelligence (CI) highlights our ability to understand and manage our communication in any environment. Judith Glaser first developed the concept and focused on professional relationships. Of course, conversations are also how we connect, engage, navigate and transform our personal lives as well, and joy is the catalyst for this transformation.

Positive Intelligence: Shifting Mindsets for Joy

Shirzad Chamine’s Positive Intelligence (PQ) measures the strength of our positive versus negative mental muscles. Joy, in this sense, is a powerful mental fitness tool that strengthens our positive mental muscles, helping us navigate life with resilience and optimism.

The Spiritual Dimension: Soul Intelligence

Soul Intelligence takes the concept of intelligence beyond the mind and emotions, connecting it to our deeper, spiritual self. Joy, in this context, is the soul’s natural state. It transcends the ego and taps into our true essence, allowing us to live authentically and in alignment with our higher purpose.

Conclusion: Joy as the Ultimate Form of Intelligence

Joy is what we yearn for from the moment we exist, and it is the thread that runs through all facets of intelligence. Through concepts like the Chair of JOY® Experience and Joy Intelligence™, we can understand that joy is more than a fleeting emotion; it is the foundation of a life filled with meaning, purpose, and connection.

You can watch the video below to deepen your understanding of the multiple types of intelligence and also experience the Chair of JOY®. Then join me next month when we’ll explore the intersection of brain-heart coherence, mental health and JOY.

And finally, in the spirit of encouraging you to really engage with the JOY theme of the month, I invite you to start a Chair of Joy® journal if you haven’t already and record the memory that came up for you in the CoJ I guided you through in the video. I’d love to hear about it, too!

  1. What a beautiful and inspiring read, Deborah! I really enjoyed how you explored the different kinds of intelligence and wove joy into each one so naturally. It made me think about how joy really is at the heart of how we connect, grow, and show up in the world. I especially loved the reminder that joy is the soul’s natural state—yes, indeedy.
