New Moon In Taurus – Honoring your Body

New Moon in Taurus with Deborah Roth

Whether you’re a big fan of astrology or not, there’s no denying the influence the moon has on our world. While the most obvious effect is on the tides, there are so many other examples. Hospital delivery rooms gear up for a baby boom when the moon is at its fullest, and savvy farmers follow its rhythms to plot the best times for sowing and reaping.

And is it any wonder since human bodies are made up of 80 percent water that you\’re inexorably tied to her rhythms as well?

I’ve been facilitating Moon Circles for over 25 years, and while the Full Moon may have more romantic lore woven around it, I’ve gravitated toward the deep, dark time of the New Moon when we’re naturally drawn to go within, to focus on what we’re leaving behind and begin to plant seeds for the ideas, plans, and actions we want to grow over the coming weeks as the Moon itself waxes towards full again.

What a profound gift it is that we get to move through that cosmic release/renew cycle every month!

Taurus New Moon qualities

“It\’s May, it\’s May, the lusty month of May…”  Guinevere, new queen of “Camelot”, certainly knew what she was singing about in that iconic musical. Dancing around the Maypole, creating May baskets, crowning the Queen and King of the May… all of those traditions capture the original meaning of May Day: lust, flowers, running into the woods to make whoopee – what’s not to love?!

How convenient that the New Moon in Taurus, that earthy, body-loving sign, always falls around this time. And did I mention that Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus, who was also the goddess of love and beauty? When the Moon is in Taurus, you may be more focused on physical pleasures and feel deeply drawn to create beauty around you.

New Moons in general are great times to plant seeds for the ideas, plans, and actions we want to grow over the coming weeks as the Moon itself waxes towards full again. What better month to celebrate your beautiful body and create a powerful ritual to do just that?

So how can you harness all this powerful energy to conjure up some Taurus New Moon magic on April 30th?

With any intentional New Moon work, it’s always helpful to know which symbols and associations to draw on. Here are a few to get you started in creating your magical Taurus toolkit:

Elemental energy – Earth

Colors – greens, pink (Iike all those flowering trees!)

Gemstones — emerald, rose quartz

Flowers – rose (symbol of love and beauty), tulips, daffodils

Essential Oils – rose, ylang-ylang

Music – drumming, sultry love songs

Food/Drink – rich and/or sweet foods; full-bodied wines

Setting up your New Moon ritual space

Whenever I teach or speak about the power of ritual in our lives (the subject of my Masters’ thesis many years ago), I talk about the four basic elements that must be present to ensure that it’s truly transformative. You can read more about these “ritual ground rules” in last month’s New Moon article HERE.

Taurus New Moon Ritual To Honor Your Body

Once you’ve created an environment that feels nurturing, safe, and inviting, you want to fill your sacred space with some of the tools from your toolkit. Start by lighting a green or pink candle and place some roses or spring flowers nearby. Then, since Taurus is all about stimulating your bodily senses, be sure to have some luscious food or drink nearby (maybe some chocolate-covered strawberries and rosé wine?) to tingle your taste buds. Put on some mellow, earthy drumming music and let it sink into your bones. Some of my favorites are David and Steve Gordon’s Sacred Spirit Drums, and Marina Raye’s Drumming into Paradise.

But perhaps the most powerful of all your senses is the sense of smell, or “olfaction.” That’s because your olfactory glands are directly connected to the limbic system, the part of your brain that activates your emotions and memories. So, if you really want to ground your Taurus work deeply in your being, burn some rose or ylang-ylang essential oil in your aromatherapy lamp.

Now that you’ve set your magical stage, what symbolic actions will you take to anchor your New Moon commitment to honor your body? One of my quintessential earthy activities is to take a mud bath! Or at the very least treat yourself to a clay face mask. You can find great ready-made masks online or blend your own — check out the benefits of an Aztec clay mask for face and/or body…you’ll love it.

And to turn it into a real New Moon intention-setting ritual, try writing some of your body-nurturing commitments into the clay before it dries… more sleep? Regular pedicures? Maybe just drawing a heart to remind yourself to love your body? You’ve now basically carved your intentions onto your body and even when you wash away the clay, that tactile memory will remain.

There are so many directions to go when you’re playing with New Moon energy. It definitely takes some preparation – I always joke about the “schlep” factor involved when I’m carting all those things from my ritual toolbox to a workshop or New Moon circle! But creating symbolic actions with a clear intention in sacred space is a powerful addition to some of the more “traditional” goal-setting practices you might have. And frankly, it’s just more fun… can you see why I call it “sacred play”?

I hope you’ll join me next month as we tap into the energy of the Gemini New Moon on May 30th!
