Oftentimes, as women, we get so caught up in being something and someone else that we forget who we are. Or we may never have known.
Between programming, societal expectations and our environment, sometimes we are born into roles that are already in place. Daughter. Employee. Wife. Caregiver. The strong one. The one who holds everything together.
We step into these roles because they are expected, because of our belief blueprint, because they are familiar, because somewhere along the way we learned that this is what being a “good” woman looks like.
Then midlife arrives. Usually around our 40s. And we start to question things. Wondering why life is the way it is and whether we had any real say in the choices that shaped it, why we didn’t say heck no to so many things.
The gift of midlife, and moving into the pre-menopause years and beyond, is clarity. Often, as our children get older or leave home, space starts to appear. Space that hasn’t been there in decades. And that is where we start to hear ourselves again.
At first, it can feel a little wrong. Like, we are breaking the rules and being a rebel. Why would we question a life that’s been ours for so long?
But maybe the better question is: Why have we been living a life that wasn’t our own? Why do we follow the rules without resisting and pushing back? When did we decide to stop creating a life by design?
My life was pretty standard. I did what was expected and didn’t question it. That changed when both of my parents died young, and I was left questioning everything.
Why was I spending all this time doing things that didn’t make me happy? What if I did everything “right” and never got to enjoy it? What even was the point?
My thinking shifted overnight, and I began to question everything. If I didn’t want that future, something had to change.
Self-exploration for me began around 40, and it’s still ongoing. At first, it was uncomfortable. Pushing boundaries. Breaking habits. Letting go of expectations. Disappointing people. Learning about boundaries.
Over time, though, things started to feel different. I began to trust myself. I started listening to that quiet inner voice instead of the loud outside noise. I made choices that felt right for me, even when they didn’t make sense to anyone else.
I began to feel more like myself than I ever had. It was liberating. A new way of living started to emerge. One that felt like it was actually mine. And it felt so good!
Yes, as women, we are the nurturers. We are drawn to helping, supporting, and healing others. But in this stage of life, we start to turn inward too. To ask ourselves what we need. What feels good. What makes us feel like ourselves again? Even the basic question: what do I want?
There is so much freedom to be found here.
If you’re just starting out, here are some things that will be helpful on this journey:
Quiet time before anyone gets up
Even 10 minutes can make a difference. A cup of tea, a journal, and no expectations. Do a brain dump and put everything down on paper. Don’t think, just write. Notice what comes up without judging it. This is your time to check in with yourself before the world demands anything from you.
Movement and breath
This isn’t about exercise or hitting the gym. It’s about reconnecting with your body and breath. Qigong, yoga, tai chi, or just stretching on the living room floor. Slow, intentional movement reminds you that you live in your body, not just your head. Even a few minutes can release tension and reset how you feel.
Get out in nature
Fresh air, trees, water, sky. It’s simple but powerful (and free!). Nature helps you slow down, see perspective, and calm the noise. Even a short walk or sitting in the garden can help you feel grounded and more like yourself.
Reset your nervous system
Many of us have lived in go-mode for decades. Taking moments to pause, breathe, and slow down matters. Try deep belly breathing, a few minutes of meditation, or just sitting in stillness. These small acts give your body and mind a chance to recalibrate and leave space for clarity.
None of these requires dramatic changes. They are small, consistent ways to come back to yourself. Over time, they build a foundation for reclaiming the parts of you that have been waiting quietly for attention.
And that’s where it starts.

This is such a beautiful reflection on the quiet awakening that often arrives in midlife, Kim. I love how you honor the moment when a woman begins to hear her own inner voice again after years of tending to everyone else. That space you describe is sacred.
