Peace begins where expectations end ~ Sri Chinmoy
I have reflected deeply on Sri Chinmoy’s quote. As socialised beings we are taught to and have deeply ingrained expectations of others and ourselves. It is an evolutionary thing to maintain the order of communities and survival the human race. When our own personal and deeply ingrained social expectations are not met we experience suffering and a sense of loss of this expected order.
It is challenging for the mind to accept experiences and events that cause us the painful emotions of loss and grief. On a social level, broken expectations lead to feelings of confusion and fear of chaos. Moving to a mindset of radical acceptance can be challenging in these situations. I prefer to take a step into grudging acceptance dialectic – “I do not like this and it is what it is”.
Expectations are not real they are just “stories” I have authored to help me make meaning of what is happening around me. I have learnt that my deeper experiences of peace have come with \’going within\’ and sitting in the acceptance of ‘it is what it is’ however I do not have to like it.
When I step into acceptance of the flow and sit in my centre, I am held by an expansive feeling of the peace of connectedness. I am able to live authentically and make choices that maintain my personal integrity. Peace does sit on the edge of expectations and I have the choice to step into my peace.
