Hatred acts like the venomous bite of a poisonous snake. Without an antidote, the victim dies. Love is the only action that has the power to halt the consequences of the poison.
Not long ago, a senseless crime took the life of a seven-year-old girl and her newborn sister. The grief and anger hung like a fog over our city. Everyone would have understood if the parents had lashed out in anger. They didn’t. Not only did they forgive the perpetrator, but even in their intense grief, they thought of others by donating the girls’ organs. Several families celebrated a profound miracle of life and love. A selfless, caring act soothed the pain of their broken hearts. The fog lifted and the sun broke through in the community. Love made the difference.
We saw the same selfless actions in Charleston, SC when the relatives of the nine people killed in an irrational act of hatred, forgave the person who had robbed them of their loved ones. We would not have blamed them if they had spoken out and incited more violence. Their loving act of forgiveness defused the potential for more hatred. It demonstrated that love has the authority to stop hatred. The world watched and celebrated the ordinary people who gave us an extraordinary example of the influence of love. The hatred unleashed that day was brought to a standstill.
We’ve seen many inspiring examples of how love triumphs over hate and halts its advancement. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Corrie Ten Boom, are well known examples of love in action. They could have spent their lives hating what their perpetrators did. Instead, they chose the path of love. They have become heroes, champions who have made the world a better place.
There is no doubt that the poison of hate will strike again. However, every time an antidote of love is given, the venom loses some of its influence. Love, nothing more, nothing less, makes the difference.
