The Wellness Universe (WU): Hello Caya, please tell us about yourself and what inspired you to write your chapter in the book The Wellness Universe Guide to Complete Self-Care: 25 Tools For Navigating Loss, Grief and Transition.

Caya Tanski (CT): Not too long ago, when I was driving down a little side street in my town, I came upon an old friend who was walking his little dog.  I stopped, rolled down the window to say hello, and, since there was very little traffic on that street, we chatted for a while.  We talked about our lives and families a bit. After we parted, I could not forget one of the things he said to me:  “If anybody in this town knows anything about you, they know you have dealt with a lot of grief in your life.”

Whew. And Gulp. I don’t post on social media much, and when I do, I rarely share a lot about what’s going on in my life. This is partly because I ask myself the question, “Do I really want to share my private life?”  and I think, “If I do share, I would rather post something either that is socially relevant or uplifting, not something that’s personally painful.”

So, this friend’s comment was a bit jolting, but it also made me re-assess my unwillingness to share publicly.  I thought, if I am already known for grief I’ve had in my life, I may as well be known for the LESSONS I’ve learned from dealing with it, rather than allow people to see me as some kind of victim of circumstances, or even to see myself that way.

Working with grief has been an important part of my spiritual practice for more than 20 years, and the practice has been deep, rich, and transformative.  I’ve learned so much from my experience, my deep study of spiritual literature, and my committed spiritual practice that I concluded, What better thing to do than to share it with whoever can benefit?

I know that what I have learned about working with grief can support and empower others on their own journey.  Besides working with the wisdom of spiritual traditions in very practical ways, depending on the needs of each person, I offer many healing modalities, energy medicine practices, and homeopathic and nutritional ways of supporting individuals and groups through the grieving and healing process.

Grief is not an obstacle IN the way of living fully, it can BE the way.

WU: What tool do you share in this book, and what can we expect to experience as a result of using this tool?

CT:  I offer a three-part tool that includes a wisdom-based understanding of grief, a somatic practice for release and transformation, and guidance for establishing a daily practice. By engaging with these tools, readers can expect to: (a) find refuge in wisdom and in their own hearts, (b) experience greater relief, ease, and spaciousness in the body, and (c) cultivate greater consistency, resilience, and inner strength in daily life.

WU: What gives you confidence that these tools can help others?

CT: These tools and practices grew organically out of my own lifelong journey with grief and trauma. From childhood through adulthood, like many people, I have had to find ways to navigate personal loss and hardship. At the same time, I have been deeply aware of, and personally affected by, the collective and environmental trauma challenges facing our communities and people around the world.

Throughout my careers as both a development economist and a natural health physician, I have devoted myself to understanding the roots of suffering and healing at every level—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, economic, political, and environmental.

I do not claim to have all the answers. However, decades of study, personal experience, and work with others have shown me that the tools I share can be profoundly helpful in supporting healing, resilience, and freedom in the face of life’s difficulties.
